Advertising mail, also known as direct mail, junk mail, or admail, is the delivery of advertising material to recipients of postal mail. The delivery of advertising mail forms a large and growing service for many postal services, and direct-mail marketing forms a significant portion of the direct marketing industry. Some organizations attempt to help people opt out of receiving advertising mail, in many cases motivated by a concern over its negative environmental impact.

Advertising mail includes advertising circulars, catalogs, CDs, “pre-approvedcredit card applications, and other commercial merchandising materials delivered to both homes and businesses. It may be addressed to pre-selected individuals, or unaddressed and delivered on a neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood basis.

Direct Mail?
Q. I have a small business and am looking to obtain a direct mail list, which also includes email addresses. There are quite a few out there on the internet, but I don't have the time to research all of them to determine if they have what I need and are reputable. Can anyone suggest a good and reputable direct mail provider/broker that will provide references?

How much does cooperative direct mail marketing cost?
Q. I'm curious to know if anyone knows (ballpark) how much it costs to send out a small flyer in a cooperative direct mail marketing envelope such as valpak. Does anyone here have any experience with how much it may cost per thousand flyers or anything like that to give me a general idea of the costs?

A. Hello: Go to and go look for information on Bulk Mailing to learn all the steps as far as the Post Office is concerned. Keep in mind that if you REALLY want the pieces to reach who you are sending them to - it's a better idea to pay First Class postage. The stories of people who have found dumpsters filled with thousands of pieces of unsent bulk mail behind the post office - are the stuff of marketing legend. Yes, it does happen. By the time you figure in the cost of postage, the card itself, if you purchased a targeted mailing list (you get this through a "list broker") and the labor to get them stamped and addressed - I think a conservative estimate would be about 80 cents to one dollar per piece to get it out. So for 1,000… [cont.]
