How do you sign up to usenet?
Q. Usenet has a monthly fee, but it's better than limewire because it doesn't have viruses.

A. You don't sign up to it, but you might pay for a service that provides access to them. They are free and most of the big ISPs give you unlimitted access to them ... you simply need to find out the address for it. It is always faster to use your ISPs Usenet feeds rather than going through any 3rd party service. The usenet server address may be something like: news-server@yourisp.com That's what mine is

Why subscribe to Usenet when I could just do a search on google?
Q. Isn't it the same thing? I hear that the biggest forum of all is still "Usenet." That's the same as "newsgroups" which can all be searched on goggle using the "news" option, right? Do many people still use it? Perhaps I'm missing out on half the internet. The "web" is only part of it.
Asked by theeshusher - Sun Jul 13 02:50:25 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. For fast servers and downloading of binary content, mostly. ISPs and a few others provide premium Usenet service. It costs money to run the service and generally is not supported by advertising far as I know. It is a service something like an email server, a private server to send messages from, only these are discussion groups rather than email. You are correct that the web is only part of the Internet, although a big part. And Google Groups has put much of Usenet on the web.

A. I hope i get your question right. Usenet in general is free. So is subscribing to any kind of newsgroups. What you probably meant is the fee the provider is asking for to access those groups. There are many different providers, you can have access for as low as $2.95 a month. If you want to download a lot of big files you're probably looking towards 20$ a month for an unlimited access. Which means no limitations in speed, volume etc. It pretty much depends on what you want to do. If you only want to access the discussion groups and load text files you should look if your internet provider gives you access to those. But be aware these groups are often censored by the provider. If you're looking for some uncensored group providers here's a… [cont.]

How do I get binary files from usenet groups?
Q. I have tried outlook express and mozilla's thunderbird and I have access to newsgroups, but whenever I try to get a file that has been parted in several entries, I only get a bunch of nonsensical text. I think it has to do with something that is called yENC. Do you know how to get the files with these applications? Or do I need to get a new one? If so, which one have you tried and is good (and preferably free)? Thanks!

A. yes i use binary newsgroups but most isp newsgroups suck most is free stuff but u need to pay for a real news service if u contact me ill give u the rundown. basicly, the files are broken into lots of text, then reassembled at your end. once setup, its only a matter of search, downlod the files in a batch. unzip and u have wat u want.

How do I gain access to Usenet services compliments of Time Warner Cable Internet?
Q. I have been told this is possible with some 8GB limit or something along those lines. Often I see this as a pay service but supposedly there is some way that your ISP allows you to do this for free, can anyone elaborate for me?

A. Time Warner might give you access to their newsgroups, but you might have to subscribe to a service like Giganews for better service which is more comprehensive.

Why are movie files on Usenet so large?
Q. I just started with Usenet so I'm an idiot. When I downloaded aXXo films they were great quality and all around 700MB. The movie files i find on usenet are anywhere from 6Gigs to 1Gig.
Asked by james_r_keene - Tue Sep 2 14:50:40 2008 - - 0 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First rule of Usenet is not to talk about Usenet. But since you already broke that, it's because the Usenet community prefers higher quality movie files. Also, many Usenet users have massive hard drives and since Usenet download speeds are often very fast, they can afford to download the better quality movie files that are significantly larger in file size.

Is "Google Groups" the only game in town to search Historical Contents of usenet?
Q. Anybody remember altavista? That's what I want. Google Groups used to be able to search historical usenet postings, but now the results are cluttered up with posts from non-usenet groups hosted exclusively by Google. I'm not interested in finding lists of usenet groups, I know they exist. I'm interested in finding an alternative way to search usenet historical posts by keyword. No answers might suggest that it's impossible to search the historical contents of usenet without the help of Google's newly crippled service. If this is true, I'm am saddened. Although searching for binaries might be the goal of some, it's not the point of my question. I'm just looking for how to do a text search on the contents of historical usenet posts. … [cont.]

A. A usenet is a topic based discussion thread where people can contribute to the ideas and discussions on that thread. The theme generally determines what the information is that is contained on that usenet group. The second link below is a beginners guide that is most helpful and a basic introduction. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

How to INCREASE my USENET Speed?
Q. I've got Astraweb(unlimited DSL) Max 20 Connections, using Newzbin, and Alt.Binz. Setup is the SSL server and I've got an AT&T 1.5Mbps DSL Connection. My max DL speed is 185kb/s which is about what I get on torrents. Not worth it in my opinion to pay for Usenet unless the speeds get much faster. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

Can I use Usenet binary newsgroups for free?
Q. I'm with Karoo as my ISP, and I want to see what all the fuss is about these newsgroup things, but seeing as torrents are free, I'm a little confused as to why you have to pay these, so does anyone know how to use them for free? Many thanks in advance. The below information was very interesting but I'm no further from understanding how you download movies and music through this way of media distribution, I'm not interested in the discussion side of things I just want to try out downloading in a different way, without the need to upload, as that is the way you get caught.

A. Usenet is free. However it is not easy to find a free local news-server. A local newsgroup access means the usenet news-server is near your location. Using a local news-server allows faster and more efficient dissemination of news. If you don't have/know a local server, you can use a public news-server such as gmane or Google Groups. The news-server is usually accessed using a program that can handle NNTP protocol. Some news-server also provide email access to the newsgroup beside from the traditional NNTP access. Some other, like Google Groups, provide web access, alling Usenet to be accessible from the browser without a special program. One thing to note: Usenet belongs to nobody.
